Ontario Retirement Communities Association
Resident of the Year 2007 Award Recipient
Mr. George Anthony
Churchill Place, Oakville, ON

A resident of Churchill Place since 1999, George Anthony contributes daily to the lives of our residents, families, employees and visitors. Mr. Anthony developed “The Churchill Chimes” choral group, explaining that members don’t need to be altos, sopranos or tenors, but simply someone who wants to have fun! The “Chimes” have grown in size to include 20 residents and two of Mr. Anthony’s close friends from the community. Over the past two years the “Chimes” have traveled across Halton to entertain other retirement residences and long-term-care homes. Their repertoire includes all the oldies that are familiar tunes for their audience, and Mr. Anthony spends many an hour researching lyrics and updating the song books. The “Chimes” proudly wear their customized shirts – another coup for Mr. Anthony – and entertain groups with such joie de vivre that all find it refreshing to see a cheerful group of seniors making such a positive contribution to their community. Mr. Anthony, as conductor, technical director, and sometime comedian, has a very simple philosophy about why this has been such a successful venture. “People need to take time to focus on having fun and step out of themselves for a little while to enjoy the good things in life. If I can help someone to join in and feel good, then I have accomplished something.”

Mr. Anthony was accompanied by family, friends and the management team of Churchill Place to the ORCA Convention in Toronto on April 16 to receive his Resident of the Year Award. The luncheon ceremony was a lovely affair and Mr. Anthony’s acceptance speech was met with a cheering, standing ovation by the over 1000 attendees.

We are extremely proud of Mr. Anthony as the Recipient of the Ontario Retirement Communities Association Resident of the Year for 2007. He claims to be an ordinary man, but he is extraordinary in our eyes.
